The Mitsubishi Evo models all evolved over the years, the very latest incarnation is the Evo VIII FQ340 MR. This family sized saloon with its 2.0 litre turbo charged engine can keep up with the likes of the supercars, yet is affordable and ultimately a thrill a minute of a ride, once the right foot has been planted on the "Go" pedal. As close as you're going to get to the full-blown world rally spec edition being used throughout the WRC this year.

They have become more powerful, heavier but with improved chassis as each one came out. Road models have changed to push cars like the Subaru’s. The Evo VIII FQ340 MR is probably the ultimate mass produced Evo, weighing 1400kg, and with its 345bhp, and 4wd like all the other models, it could sprint to 60 in a theoretical time of 4.12sec, 0-100 in an amazing 10.57secs, and a “through the gears 60-100” time of 6.45secs, a figure which can show a cars true performance once moving. It should also cover the 1/4mile in 12.77secs at 109.92mph on the road, and on a much more stickier drag strip surface this could be down to as low as 12.37secs at 113.55mph.Very very quick, even compared regular Evos.

Other past Evos worth mentioning are the VI models being the GSR, Makinen Edition, and the RS. The GSR figures, 276bhp and 1360kg, could be 0-60 4.88secs, 0-100 in 13.10secs, 60-100 in 8.21secs, 1/4mile in 13.61secs at 101.92secs, and a drag strip surface closer to 13.21secs at 105.18mph could be possible. The UK market had the Makinen Edition with an unofficial 290bhp it was slightly quicker with its improved turbo at 0-60 in 4.67secs, 0-100 in 12.40secs, 60-100 in 7.73secs, 1/4 mile in 13.38 at 103.83mph and drag surface of 12.98secs at 107.22mph. But there was also a lightweight 1255kg RS version, mainly used for rallying and in its sprint form; it was the quickest Evo yet with 330bhp. Figures could be as low as 0-60 in 3.91secs, 0-100 in 10.22secs, 60-100 in 6.31secs, 1/4mile in 12.58scs at 110.96mph, and a drag surface 1/4mile in as low as 12.18secs at 114.70mph. Very quick, but raw for the road, and rare.

What about the competition for the latest FQ340? Well Subaru has always been its closest rival. Like the Evos, there are too many too mentions, but the three closest rivals to the very fastest of the Evos, are the latest models, the WR1, the Spec C, and the Type 25. The WR1 figures with 316bhp but 1470kg could be 0-60 4.62secs, 0-100 12.03secs, 60-100 7.41secs, 1/4mile 13.31secs at 105.15mph, and drag 1/4mile in 12.91secs at 108.54mph, quick but its weight really reducing its potential compared to the FQ340. The Spec C on the other hand is quicker weighing in much lighter at 1380kg and with a higher 325bhp it could 0-60 in 4.28secs, 0-100 in nearly a second quicker at 11.11secs, 60-100 6.83secs, 1/4mile 12.95secs at 107.99mph and drag 1/4mile in 12.55secs at 111.54mph. The fastest Subaru yet, is the 350bhp 1440kg Type 25, named because of its larger 2.5litre engine. Its 0-60 could be as low as 4.17secs, 0-100 in 10.64secs, 60-100 6.47secs, road 1/4mile in 12.82secs at 109.75mph, and drag 1/4mile in 12.42secs at 113.37mph. Compared to an FQ340, there is really no noticeable difference in the acceleration theory figures, both showing how far the rally reps have moved on in recent years and how close they rival each other.
